What does the CANSA Seal of Recognition on products mean?
It’s CANSA’s 90th Anniversary— the perfect time to reflect on the important role CANSA plays in ensuring our skincare products are safe. But do you know what that CANSA symbol on your favourite skin products actually means and why it’s important? Here’s why the CANSA Seal of Recognition matters.
The CANSA Seal of Recognition (CSOR)
The CANSA Seal of Recognition (CSOR) is a game-changer when it comes to safe products for consumers. It gives you the peace of mind knowing the product doesn’t contain any harmful cancer-causing ingredients.
CSOR products undergo:
- Independent testing at labs that comply with the National Standards.
- Randomised testing for quality assurance after the product has been approved.
It’s nice to know that CANSA is quality testing hundreds of consumer products in South Africa on a regular basis. That’s certainly one less thing to worry about. The CSOR was introduced in the early 2000s as an easy way for consumers to figure out which products contribute to cancer risk reduction. If you notice the little CANSA Smart Choice trademark logo on product packaging or online product pages, it means the product is CANSA-approved.
Next time you pop into your local supermarket, it might be a good idea to check the labels more often and look out for that CANSA Seal of Recognition. You might just find CANSA approved sunscreen, cereal, cleaning materials and other safe products to use. You’ll also find a complete range of baby skincare products bearing the CSOR, complements of Nunuki. Sounds good, right?

Why you should know about CANSA as a conscious consumer
Over 100 000 people in South Africa are diagnosed with cancer each year, making it super important for parents, children, and everyone in between to know more about CANSA. The association has a huge role to play in cancer awareness, healthcare and endorsing safe products that reduce exposure to cancer causing agents.
Cancer Association of South Africa, established in 1931, is making waves when it comes to cancer research and education, support services, patient caregivers and fundraising. In the early stages, the organisation focused on creating a cancer register and building cancer centres throughout the country. 90 years later, it’s in the midst of celebrating major expansion and growth. For example, CANSA is now able to focus on incentives like lowering cancer risk for consumers by endorsing safe skin products.
Keeping that in mind, you might be interested in knowing a little bit more about CANSA as an organisation.
What is CANSA up to?
CANSA is on a mission to promote cancer research while offering comprehensive services to people affected by the illness, including their loved ones. It’s truly inspiring to see a non-profit organisation effectively educate the public about cancer, provide relevant services to those in need and promote several fundraisers like the cancer shavathon. This creates a safe space for people to get involved with impactful cancer health programmes and make a difference.
CANSA Advocacy Team
CANSA has put together a full-fledged Advocacy Team that educates those in power on how we can win the fight against cancer. Given the association’s access to science-based cancer research, it can hold policymakers in South Africa accountable and continue to fulfil a watchdog role.
It’s definitely time for everyday South Africans to put more thought into the skincare products we tend to buy. Are they safe to use on a regular basis? We should be living in a reality where cancer risks are reduced, and more cancer survivors live to tell their tales. As much as we don’t like to hear it, the cancer survival rate is only 6/10 as of 2014.
CANSA Care Centres & Care Homes
There are 8 CANSA Care Centres located across South Africa. The centres provide dynamic cancer treatment and support groups for anyone that has been affected by cancer.
The 8 CANSA Care Homes are country-wide in provinces such as Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal. The homes cater to major cities including Pretoria, Pietermaritzburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounds. These lovely homes are accommodation for out-of-town cancer patients and their families. There are treatment options available for various types of cancer ranging from breast cancer to lung cancer.
