We understand that parenting can be confusing. Our mission is to make your life as easy as possible. Below are a few answers to some frequently asked questions. Please feel free to reach out if you are unsure, or do not find what you are looking for below.

Are Nunuki® products 100% natural and organic?

No. The Nunuki® journey started with the objective to develop a skincare range for babies and children that feels and smells amazing and is absolutely safe for little one’s skin. Even though the active ingredients in all the products (with the exception of our sunscreen) are natural, our products do not claim natural or organic. We used the best from science and nature to produce exceptional products.

Are Nunuki products developed for babies and children with eczema?

Eczema is a medical condition, also known as contact dermatitis. Therefore we recommend parents follow a specialist’s advice for everything relating to this condition. To date, our products have not aggravated eczema flairs in any of our babies with this condition – that being said, we do not recommend Nunuki® products for eczema babies.

Is Nunuki® bum cream cloth nappy friendly?

Not entirely. Our bum cream contains Zinc, which is a phenomenal skin healing and protective mineral. When Zinc is mixed with natural oils it does not bode well for long-term maintenance of cloth nappies, as it leaves a residue in these nappies. Seeing that this is a growing need for our parents trying to be more environmentally friendly, we will be developing a cloth nappy friendly bum cream option in future.

Are the Nunuki® products vegan and/or cruelty-free?

With the exception of our bum cream, all Nunuki® products are vegan. Our bum cream contains lanolin, which is derived from sheep wool. Nunuki® products have only ever been tested on willing humans, and never on animals.

Is the Nunuki® sunscreen a physical or chemical sunscreen?

We have used a mix of chemical and mineral UVA and UVB filters. Physical or mineral sunscreens use titanium dioxide and zinc oxide as the main UVA & UVB filters. Sensitive skin tends to have a reaction to the zinc oxide when exposed to the sun. We are in the process of developing a physical/mineral sunscreen. Currently, all formulas tested leave a white layer on top of the skin, which is not ideal.

Why is the Nunuki® sunscreen only SPF30?

Because SPF 30 is more than sufficient. SPF refers to protection from UVB rays. SPF 30 protects against 97% of UVB rays and SPF 50 protects against 98% of UVB rays. The SPF factor also indicates how long you will be protected from the UVB rays. If you start burning in the sun after 5 x minutes of sun exposure, an SPF 30 product will protect you for 30 x 5minutes = 150minutes. However, it is advisable to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours anyway, so SPF 30 sunscreen gives more than enough protection.

It is important to check if the sunscreen has a UVA symbol – this ensures that the sunscreen protects against the UVA rays that we cannot feel or see. These rays cause ageing and cancer, so sufficient UVA protection is important. The UVA index must be at least 1/3 of the SPF protection.
CANSA will only endorse sunscreen products with sufficient UVA and UVB protection. Nunuki® sunscreen is CANSA endorsed.

From what age can you use Nunuki® sunscreen?

The melanin (the pigment that helps absorb sun’s rays) on a baby’s skin only starts forming at the age of 6 months and therefore sunscreen application is only recommended from 6 months. However, rather be on the safe side, and apply sunscreen if you do take your baby out in the direct sunlight between 10h00 and – 15h00.

Do Nunuki® products contain parabens?

No. Nunuki® do not contain parabens. However, as with a lot of fake news out there, parabens have received bad coverage over the last couple of years, and marketers quickly used ‘paraben-free’ on labelling to imply products are better for not containing parabens
Although some parabens are not safe – the ones used in reputable cosmetics are. This is why recent labelling regulations prohibit using ‘paraben-free’ as this implies that parabens are bad for you, while in fact it has been proven to be some of the safest preservatives around

Are Nunuki® products safe for use from birth?

All Nunuki® products have been dermatologically tested for sensitive skin, so they are all safe from birth. However, it is advisable to use as little as possible on your baby’s skin until 6 weeks. You can then start using different products to see if there is any adverse reaction on their skin. We offer a 100% money-back guarantee should there be any adverse reaction. Skin is very unique, and we have even seen reactions to avocado oil. We don’t want you to continue using our products if they don’t agree with your little one’s skin

Does Izey’s Hair & Body Wash contain SLS?

No. SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) or SLES (sodium laureth sulfate) gives the ‘foam’ to soap and helps make the skin feel ‘squeaky clean’. These ingredients have received a lot of bad press, as sensitive skin could react to certain formulations containing these ingredients. These compounds are produced from petroleum and plant sources such as coconut and palm oil. However, we are not allowed to label ‘SLS free’ anymore according to the new labelling regulations, as this implies that products that do contain SLS are dangerous (which is not the case).
For children’s products, we use softer ingredients for cleaning. We still have to test whether they are gentle on little ones’ skins, as even natural products can have adverse reactions on sensitive skin.

We used the following replacement ingredients in Izey’s Hair & Body wash:

Iselux® Ultra Mild (Inci Water, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Methyl Oleoyl Taurate, Lauroyl Glucoside, Coco-glucoside) which is tear-free and provides a dense, luxurious lather while leaving behind a soft after-feel on skin and hair

And then we added:

  • Jojoba: a film-former, moisturising, repair-and-conditioning, 100% plant-derived, non-allergenic.
  • Evening Primrose oil: helps the body to build up a protection against epidermal dehydration. Enhance moisture retention ability of skin from within. Skin conditioning agent.
  • Argan oil: antioxidant properties, provides deep hydration, simple absorption into skin and hair, improves skin barrier function.
  • Carrot oil contains Vitamin E: moisturising, retaining the water in the skin, improves hydration, stimulates skin barrier.
  • Sunflower oil: contains fatty acids, restores moisture.
